Nakagusuku Castle is on the list of 100 famous castles in Japan. It is also designated as a Japanese historical site as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site, under the title “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Ryukyu Kingdom”.

excavationIn 1995, the Japanese government granted funds for a 20 year conservation program for excavations and masonry restoration.

Chinese porcelain from the 13th to 15th centuries was found in the excavations, as well as Ryukyuan ceramic materials such as tools, arrowheads, handles of swords, and bullets.

Underground ditches used for surplus water were found during the excavations, especially around the Ufugaa well in the north enclosure.

It is believed that the ditches were constructed before the third enclosure and these ditches are the only ones to be found in a castle in Okinawa.

We hope that future excavations will shed more light on the history of Nakagusuku Castle.
